Bury AC’s young superstar, Ethan Statham, won the Astley Park Junior Trail Race against athletes older than him last week.

The 10-year-old ran brilliantly, scorching around the mile-long course in 4mins 55secs - and then competed again on Saturday, this time at the Mid Lancs Track and Field League, at Blackburn. He won his heat of the under-13 boys’ 800m in 2:27.2.

Bury’s other winners on the day included Peter Gardner in the senior men’s 400m. The hurdle specialist made a great start to his season with a very respectable 53.1, while Ben Clarke notched up another victory in the U15 boys’ javelin, with a throw of 41.94. Agatha Wragg won her U15 girls’ 300m heat in 45.7 and Matilda Nott won her U13 girls’ 100m heat with 14.3. Sammy McBride-Duerden won his heat in the U13 boys’ 100m with 14.9.

The meeting saw some other excellent performances from Bury youngsters. For the U15 boys, Harry Dada-March took fourth in his 100m heat with 13.1 and Jakub Purzycki took eighth in his 800m heat with 2:30.8. The two then competed in the long jump with Harry sixth, with 4.15, and Jakub 10th, with 3.93. The U13 boys had McBride-Duerden back on the track in the 200m where he took fourth in his heat with 30.9. Luca Hilton was fifth in his 200m heat, with 34.9, while the two also competed in the long jump with Sammy sixth, in 3.57, and Luca 13th, with 3.24.

In the U15 girls’ events, Laila Musvamhiri took fourth in her 100m heat, with 14.7, and then went on to take fourth in the javelin, with 17.33. Carraghen Spence was sixth in her 200m heat in 29.4, while Agatha Wragg also competed over 200m, taking fourth in her heat with 30.4. Carraghen also competed over 300m, finishing third in 46.5. Faye Gribbin ran well in the 800m race, taking fifth with a new PB of 2:26.5. Lucy Dent produced a superb run in the 1500m to take second in a tight finish with 5:05.9, a new PB. For the U13 girls, Thea Golby-Thomson was fifth in her 100m heat with 16.5. Running in a separate heat, Lyla Parkinson was second, in 16.0, and Nancy Blain was third in 16.8. Matila Nott took second in her 200m heat with 29.1 with Nancy third in her heat with 33.8. Lyla was back on the track in the 800m where she took ninth with 2:49.9. Kathryn Wolstenholme took an excellent third in the 1500m with 5:53.2.

In the field events, Thea took fifth in the high jump with 1.10; Matilda and Nancy took sixth and 21st in the long jump with 3.59 and 2.60, respectively. Annabelle Hinze took third in the shot with 4.84, with Lydia Blackmore fifth in 3.57. Lyla and Katherine competed in the javelin, taking third and fifth with 8.87 and 4.00, respectively.
